Frequently asked questions
Which favicon sizes do I actually need?
16x16 and 32x32 for browser tabs, 180x180 for Apple touch icons, and 192x192 plus 512x512 for Android and PWA manifests. Five files covers every real case.
Do I still need favicon.ico?
Rarely. Every browser released in the last decade reads PNG favicons from link tags. A root favicon.ico is only worth keeping for very old clients that request it blindly.
Why does my favicon look muddy at 16px?
Detail disappears at that size. Favicons that read well are a single letter or one bold shape - a shrunk-down full logo turns to mush.
Why does the browser still show the old icon?
Favicons are cached aggressively and ignore normal cache headers. Add a query string to the href, or check in a private window.
What size should the source image be?
At least 512 x 512 and square. Anything smaller has to be upscaled for the manifest icons and looks soft on Android home screens.
Do I need a site.webmanifest?
Only if you want the site installable or a custom home-screen icon on Android. It is a small JSON file referencing the 192 and 512 icons.
Should the favicon match my logo exactly?
Usually not. A full wordmark is illegible at 16px. Use the mark, a single letter, or a simplified version with more contrast.
Can a favicon be an SVG?
Yes, and modern browsers prefer it - one file, sharp at every size, and it can respond to dark mode with a media query. Keep PNG fallbacks for Safari and older clients.
