Frequently asked questions
Why convert JPG to PNG?
Because you are about to edit it. Every JPEG save re-compresses and loses more detail; working in PNG means no further degradation. Some tools and CMS uploads also reject JPEG.
Will the PNG be bigger than the JPG?
Almost always, often several times over. PNG is lossless and stores every pixel; JPEG throws detail away. The size increase is expected.
Does converting improve image quality?
No. Detail lost to JPEG compression is gone permanently. Converting preserves exactly what remains, which is all any format can do.
How do I make the background transparent?
Converting does not add transparency - it only preserves it. You need an editor or a background-removal tool to cut the subject out first.
Does the conversion remove EXIF data?
Yes. Redrawing on a canvas drops camera, date and GPS metadata, which is a useful side effect before sharing a photo publicly.
Is PNG or WebP the better choice?
WebP, if the software you are handing it to accepts it. Lossless WebP is about 25% smaller than PNG for the same pixels.
Is my file uploaded?

Does this handle HEIC photos from an iPhone?
Only if your browser can decode HEIC, which Safari can and most others cannot. Export as JPEG from the Photos app first.
