Minecraft Circle Generator

You cannot, strictly. Blocks are square, so every circle is an approximation. The standard method fills a block when the centre of that block falls inside the true circle, which is what this generator does and what every large build uses.

Odd diameters give you a single centre block, which makes it far easier to align a beacon, a pillar or a nether portal. Even diameters leave a 2x2 centre and are harder to build symmetrically.

A thin circle marks a block when any of its four edge neighbours is outside the circle. A thick circle also checks the four diagonal neighbours, so the ring is wider and reads more clearly from a distance or from the ground.

A sphere is a stack of discs. Build the widest circle at the middle layer, then work up and down using the diameter for each layer, which shrinks as you move away from the centre. Layer n of a sphere of radius r has diameter 2 x sqrt(r squared - n squared).

Past about 60 blocks across the outline stops reading as a circle from ground level and the block count runs into the hundreds. Above that, build it in sections and check the shape from the air.

The tool counts them for you as you change the diameter. As a rough guide a thin outline uses about 2.8 blocks per unit of diameter - a little under pi, because the outline steps diagonally rather than tracing every edge.
