Frequently asked questions
Why convert PNG to JPG?
File size. A photograph saved as PNG is often five to ten times larger than the same image as JPEG at 80% quality, with no visible difference.
Does converting to JPG lose transparency?
Yes. JPEG has no alpha channel, so transparent areas become white. Convert to WebP instead if you need to keep transparency and still save space.
What quality setting should I use?
80% for photographs. Below 60% compression artefacts become visible around edges; above 90% the file grows quickly for very little gain.
Should screenshots be converted to JPG?
No. JPEG handles flat colour and sharp text badly, producing halos around letters. Keep screenshots as PNG or convert them to lossless WebP.
Is JPG or JPEG correct?
They are the same format. The three-letter extension is a leftover from MS-DOS filename limits; both are read identically everywhere.
Can I convert back to PNG afterwards?
You can, but the discarded detail does not come back. The result is a lossless copy of a lossy image and will be larger than the JPG with no gain in quality.
Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. Decoding and re-encoding happen on a canvas in your browser. There is no upload and no server involved.
Does converting strip EXIF data?
Yes. Canvas re-encoding drops all metadata, including camera details and GPS coordinates, which is useful before publishing a photo.
