How do I generate a single random letter?
Set the count to one and generate. Each of the 26 letters has the same chance of appearing, roughly 3.85% each.
Why did the same letter appear twice?
Because true randomness has no memory. With repeats allowed, two identical letters in a row is expected about once every 26 draws. Switch off repeats if you need all of them different.
How many letters can I generate without repeats?
Twenty-six, one for each letter. Restricted to vowels the ceiling is five, and to consonants it is twenty-one.
Is this good enough for a password?
No. Use a password generator instead - it mixes cases, digits and symbols and uses your browser's cryptographic random source. Letters alone are far too weak.
How is the randomness generated?
In your browser, from JavaScript's built-in random number source. Nothing is sent anywhere and no result is stored or logged.
Can I use this for Scattergories or Scrabble?
Yes, that is the common use. For Scattergories most house rules drop the awkward letters - switch to consonants and re-roll if you land on Q, X or Z.
What about a random letter for each student?
Set the count to the size of the class and turn repeats off, so every student gets a different letter. Above 26 you will need repeats back on.
