Frequently asked questions
Why convert an SVG at all?
Because some places will not take one: email clients, most social preview images, app store assets, and Open Graph tags. SVG is the better format everywhere it is accepted.
What scale should I export at?
Work out the pixel size you need and pick the scale that reaches it. An SVG with a 256px viewBox exported at 2x gives 512px, which covers most retina icon uses.
Does it keep transparency?
Yes. The PNG keeps the SVG's transparent background - no white box.
Why does my SVG render wrong?
Almost always external references. An SVG that links to a webfont or an external image cannot resolve them inside a canvas. Convert text to paths and embed images as data URIs before exporting.
What resolution should I export at?
Twice the size the image will display at, so it stays sharp on retina screens. A 200px logo should be exported at 400px.
Can I convert PNG back to SVG?
Not meaningfully. Tracing a bitmap produces an approximation with far more paths than a hand-drawn vector. Keep the original SVG.
Does the PNG keep the transparent background?
Yes. The alpha channel is preserved, so there is no white box behind the artwork.
Why does my exported PNG look blurry?
The export scale is too low, or the SVG has no width and height attributes so it rasterised at a default size. Set explicit dimensions or a viewBox and raise the scale.
