Frequently asked questions
Does llms.txt actually do anything yet?
It is a proposal, not a standard, and no major AI engine has committed to reading it. It costs ten minutes and is a plain-language summary of your site, so the downside is negligible and the upside is real if adoption comes.
How is it different from robots.txt?
robots.txt says what crawlers may not fetch. llms.txt says what a model should read first and how to describe you. One restricts, the other guides.
What should go in it?
A one-line description, then links to the pages that answer the questions people ask about your product - pricing, docs, comparisons. Not your whole sitemap.
Should I also serve markdown versions of pages?
The full proposal suggests a .md twin of each page. That is more work and more useful - it gives the model clean text with no navigation chrome.
Do AI engines actually read llms.txt?
No major engine has confirmed it as a ranking or retrieval input. The pages it points at are read regardless, so the file is cheap insurance rather than a lever.
What is llms-full.txt?
An optional companion holding the full text of your key pages in one file, so a model can ingest everything without following links. Worth adding if your site is small.
How does this compare with an XML sitemap?
A sitemap is exhaustive and machine-formatted for crawl scheduling. llms.txt is curated and human-readable - a shortlist of what matters with a sentence explaining each entry.
Should I include my blog posts?
Only the ones that answer real questions about your product or field. A dump of every post defeats the purpose, which is curation.
