Frequently asked questions
How is Morse written down?
A space separates letters and a slash separates words. Some sources use three spaces for a word break instead - this tool accepts both when decoding.
Does Morse have upper and lower case?
No. Morse encodes letters without case, so decoding always returns lowercase. Encoding is case-insensitive.
What is SOS in Morse?
... --- ... It was chosen because the pattern is unmistakable, not as an abbreviation - the popular expansions to Save Our Souls came later.
Which punctuation is supported?
Period, comma, question mark, apostrophe, exclamation, slash, brackets, ampersand, colon, semicolon, equals, plus, hyphen, underscore, quote, dollar and at.
How do I learn Morse code?
By sound, not by sight. Learn each letter as a rhythm at full speed with longer gaps between them - the Koch and Farnsworth methods - because learning a lookup table caps you at a few words a minute.
Is Morse code still used?
Yes. Amateur radio uses it daily, aviation navigation beacons identify themselves in Morse, and it remains a reliable fallback when a signal is too weak for voice.
