Frequently asked questions
How many pixels is an inch?
It depends on the DPI. It is 96 pixels in CSS and on Windows, 72 in some older Mac software, and 300 for print. A pixel has no physical size until a density is chosen.
How do I convert pixels to inches?
Divide the pixel count by the DPI. 1200 pixels at 300 DPI is 4 inches; the same 1200 pixels at 96 DPI is 12.5 inches.
What DPI should I use for print?
300 DPI for photos and anything viewed up close. 150 is fine for posters seen from a distance. Below that, prints start to look soft.
Is DPI the same as PPI?
Strictly, PPI is pixels per inch in a digital image and DPI is ink dots per inch on a printer. In practice the terms are used interchangeably for this calculation.
Why is a CSS inch not a real inch on my screen?
CSS fixes an inch at 96 CSS pixels, and devices scale CSS pixels to fit their actual density. So 1in in CSS is only roughly an inch on a real display.
How many pixels is A4 at 300 DPI?
A4 is 8.27 x 11.69 inches, which is 2480 x 3508 pixels at 300 DPI.
