About

Explore all 52 tectonic plates (7 major, 13 minor, 32 microplates), active fault boundaries, live USGS earthquakes, Ring of Fire volcanoes, and plate drift velocities in 3D WebGL.

The case

Who it is for

Geology students, teachers, and anyone tired of slow Flash-era maps.

What is broken today

Most plate tectonic maps online are either outdated desktop software, locked behind paywalls, or clunky legacy web tools that don't load smoothly.

What it does about it

Renders all 52 of Peter Bird's lithospheric plates, fault lines, and live USGS earthquake feeds directly in the browser using MapLibre GL JS and vector tiles.

Why not the obvious alternative

Static textbook diagrams can't show live seismic data, and heavy GIS software is overkill just to explore plate boundaries quickly.

Hey everyone! I built TectonicPlateMap.org because most digital geology maps are either locked behind heavy desktop software or are clunky legacy web tools from the Flash era. I wanted a fast, clean, ad-free web map where students and enthusiasts can instantly explore all 52 of Peter Bird's PB2002 tectonic plates, fault lines, and live USGS/Smithsonian seismic feeds right in the browser using MapLibre GL JS. Would love to hear what you think or if there are any other open datasets you'd like t
