# White Elephant Rules and Turn Order Picker

> In a white elephant gift exchange everyone brings one wrapped gift, draws a number, and takes turns either opening a new gift or stealing one already opened. A player who loses a gift picks again - open or steal - but cannot steal straight back the gift just taken from them. Most groups freeze a gift after its third steal, and player one gets a final chance to swap once every gift is open.

## How to use it

1. Everyone brings one wrapped gift within the agreed budget and adds it to the pile.
2. Enter the players and draw a turn order.
3. Player one opens a gift. Each player after that opens a new gift or steals an opened one.
4. A player whose gift is stolen opens a new gift or steals a different one.
5. When the last gift is open, player one may swap with anyone to finish the game.

## Common house rules

Agree these before the first gift is opened - most arguments come from rules nobody stated.

| Rule | Most common choice | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Budget | $20 - $25 | Low enough for everyone, high enough for a decent gift |
| Steals per gift | 3, then the gift is frozen | Stops one gift bouncing round the room forever |
| Steal back | Not straight away | No two-person tug of war |
| Steals per turn | One | Keeps each turn short |
| Final swap | Player one | Makes up for opening first with nothing to steal |

## Questions

### What are the basic white elephant rules?

Everyone brings a wrapped gift and draws a number. On your turn you either open a new gift or steal one that is already open. If your gift is stolen you open or steal again. The game ends when every gift is open.

### How many times can a gift be stolen?

Most groups allow three steals, after which the gift is frozen with whoever holds it. Pick the limit in the picker so everyone sees the same rule.

### Can you steal a gift back?

Not immediately. A player who just lost a gift cannot take that same gift straight back, but it can be stolen again later in the game by someone else.

### What is a good white elephant budget?

$20 to $25 is the most common. Offices often go lower, at $10 to $15, and friend groups sometimes go up to $50.

### What is the difference between white elephant and Secret Santa?

In Secret Santa you buy for one named person in secret. In white elephant nobody knows which gift they will end up with, and stealing is part of the game. For Secret Santa, use our Secret Santa generator instead.

### What is white elephant also called?

Yankee Swap and Dirty Santa are the most common other names. The rules are the same game with small house-rule differences.

### Does player one get a disadvantage?

Opening first means there is nothing to steal, which is why most groups let player one swap with anyone once the last gift is opened.
