# UTM Link Builder

> A UTM builder appends utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign parameters to a URL so analytics can attribute the visit to a specific channel and campaign. Fill in the three required fields and you get a tagged link you can paste into a newsletter, ad or social post.

## How to use it

1. Paste the destination URL you are promoting.
2. Fill in source, medium and campaign - the three parameters every analytics tool needs.
3. Copy the tagged URL and use it in exactly one place, so the report stays readable.

## Questions

### Which UTM parameters are required?

utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign. GA4 will record a visit with only some of them set, but attribution breaks down without all three.

### Should UTM values be lowercase?

Yes. UTM values are case-sensitive, so Twitter and twitter become two rows in your report. Pick lowercase and never deviate.

### What is the difference between source and medium?

Source is where the click came from (newsletter, producthunt, x). Medium is the type of channel (email, referral, social, cpc). Source answers who, medium answers how.

### Do UTM parameters hurt SEO?

Only if a tagged URL gets indexed. Set a canonical to the clean URL and the duplicate never competes.

### Do I need UTM tags on internal links?

No, and it actively breaks reporting. An internal link with a utm_source starts a new session and credits the visit to itself, wiping out the original acquisition source.

### What are utm_term and utm_content for?

utm_term carries the paid keyword, utm_content distinguishes two links in the same email or ad that point at the same place. Both are optional and only useful if you will actually read them.

### How long do UTM values persist?

GA4 attributes the session at entry. The parameters do not follow the visitor to later pages, which is why they belong only on the first click.

### Can I shorten a UTM link?

Yes - a shortener passes the parameters through on redirect. Just make sure the shortener uses a 301 or 302 and does not strip the query string.
