# F1 Reaction Time Test

> An F1 reaction time test copies the real Formula 1 start procedure: five red lights illuminate one per second, then all five go out after a random hold of 0.2 to 3 seconds, and the clock runs from lights out. Formula 1 drivers typically react in 0.2 to 0.3 seconds. Anything under 0.200s is officially a jump start, because the FIA treats a faster response as anticipation rather than reaction.

## How to use it

1. Click once to start the sequence. Five red lights come on, one per second.
2. Wait. The hold after the fifth light is random, so counting will not help you.
3. Click the instant all five lights go out. Going early is a jump start and the round does not count.

## Real F1 start numbers

Reaction is measured from lights out. Race telemetry also includes the car leaving the grid, which is why broadcast launch figures look slower than a click test.

### How do Formula 1 start lights work?

Five pairs of red lights illuminate from left to right, one per second. Once all five are on, the race director holds them for a random interval between 0.2 and 3 seconds and then extinguishes all of them at once. The race starts at lights out, not at any light coming on.

### What counts as a jump start in F1?

Moving before the lights go out, or reacting faster than 0.200s after they do. Transponders in the grid slot detect movement, and the FIA treats anything under two tenths as anticipation because human reaction cannot reliably be that quick.

### What is a typical F1 driver reaction time?

Around 0.2 to 0.3 seconds from lights out. Drivers are not measurably faster than trained members of the public at pure reaction - what they add is a clutch and throttle launch executed perfectly in the same instant.

### Why is the hold before lights out random?

So the start cannot be counted. If the gap were fixed, every driver would time the launch rather than react to it, and the grid would effectively be a rolling start.

### Why is my F1 score slower than my normal reaction score?

The anticipation is different. A plain test gives you one colour change; here you watch five lights build and then have to ignore the rhythm you just learned. Most people lose 20 to 50ms to that.

### Does this simulate the car launch too?

No. This measures the reaction half only. On a real grid the driver also has to release the clutch and feed the throttle without bogging down or spinning up, which is where most places are actually won and lost.

### What is the fastest recorded F1 start reaction?

Reliable published figures cluster around 0.15 to 0.2 seconds, and anything below 0.2 is penalised, so the practical record is effectively pinned just above two tenths.

### Can I practise this?

Yes, and it helps. Watching the last light rather than the whole bar, and keeping your finger already resting on the button, are worth more than any amount of raw training.
